Different Types of Fishing Rods.

Spinning Rods

Spinning rod type is one of the most universal, its main purpose is still the spinning method of fishing: the bait is cast over a large distance and pulled out using a reel. At the same time, the movement of live prey is simulated, which allows you to catch various species of predatory fish. Spinning rods have a relatively short length – usually no more than 3 m – and are designed for good resistance to jerking; while the elasticity of the rod can provide (with the correct selection of the weight of the gear) casting range up to 100 m. Usually have a plug-in or telescopic design.

Casting Rods

Casting rod type are similar in design and purpose to spinning models, but differ in a number of features. So, they are designed for use not with spinning reel, but with the baitcasting reel, which is also installed not from below, but from above the rod (like rings under a fishing line). The handle of casting rods has a special protrusion under the index finger, similar to the trigger of a gun. It provides a more comfortable grip, better mobility and responsiveness of the rod, and also reduces fatigue. The advantages of casting models are ergonomics, as well as high casting accuracy. Initially, such rods appeared for competitions in the accuracy of casting bait.

Fly Fishing Rods

Proper fishing rod selection is especially important for fly fishing. A fly fishing rod allows you to cast specific gear, including a loaded fly fishing line and a light fly. In addition, the rod plays an important role in the control of the cord and can simplify the process of fishing. When choosing a model of a fishing rod for fly fishing, pay attention first of all to the system and length, its strength and the weight class itself.

Trolling Rods

This type are designed for fishing from a boat. However, this category does not include all models that can be used from a boat (in fact, such an application is available for fishing rods of any type), but only specialized products for fishing using the trolling method. This method is used for freshwater and marine predatory fish: when trolling, the bait is pulled by a motor boat, boat or other watercraft, on which fishing rods are attached. The main features of the rods for such fishing is a short length (about 2 m) combined with high strength: jerking can be quite strong, short rods can withstand them better, and a large length is not required, because lures do not need to be thrown far.

Surf Rods

Specialized fishing rods for sea fishing. With such fishing, one has to deal with strong excitement, headwind and the need to throw tackle quite far, and prey can have very significant weight and strength. Surf rods are created taking into account all these factors: they have high strength combined with flexibility, withstand loads of several tens of kilograms and allow you to work with heavy gear, including cast with two hands; their rings are equipped with special castors for thick durable fishing line.

Ice Fishing Rods

A variety of rods designed for ice fishing. They have the smallest length among all types – usually up to several tens of centimeters – because during winter fishing, the fisherman sits almost above the hole itself, and excessive length only complicates the matter. Due to their short lengths, winter rods usually have only one ring under the fishing line – at the top; the coil can be either removable or integrated. Some models come with interchangeable whips of different lengths and stiffness, which allows you to choose the best option, taking into account the conditions of fishing and the gear used.

Design

The design of the fishing rod. Most often, it is folding – plug or telescopic – however, there are also solid models.

Plug fishing rod type. Such rods consist of several sections, which are completely disconnected in the stowed state, and before use they are connected to each other using bushings. On the one hand, this creates certain inconveniences: for example, for reliable transportation, it is necessary to place the fishing rod in the bag or otherwise reliably connect the components of the rod. And the folding / folding process can be quite troublesome. At the same time, this design is considered optimal for rods designed for maximum accuracy and casting distance – for example, spinning and feeder. Almost all such models are plug-in.

Telescopic fishing rod type. (“pull-out”) A design in which the sections have different thicknesses and when folded are inserted one into the other, and when unfolding, they alternately extend. Such a scheme provides maximum convenience during transportation – the rod is a “cover for itself” and does not require additional cases or ties, unlike the plug-in design. At the same time, the “telescope” significantly reduces the accuracy of casting, and therefore it is mainly used where this parameter is not critical – in particular fly-type models.

One-piece rod type. Solid rods are stronger and more reliable than composite rods, but they have one serious drawback: they cannot be folded for transportation and storage. Therefore, such a design is used relatively rarely – in particular, in individual spinnig models of relatively short length, as well as in ice fishing rods, which in principle do not need to be made long.
